Are some lives more important than others?

Should anyone have to make a choice like this?

What if you had to choose between saving your own life and that of someone else? Our answer should of course be, save the other person. I dare say you might reply, of course, I would save the other person, it’s only right. However, in this world of selfishness and hate, how many of us would actually be that self-sacrificing?

If a man was holding you and your best friend at gun-point, would you say, “No, don’t hurt them, kill me.”? I don’t think that most of us would. Human instinct says to preserve your own life, it’s evolution. Would it change if it was between you and a random stranger?

If you could save thousands of people by giving up your own life (no Jesus references thanks, I mean actual salvation) would you do it? Do you have the right to save their lives? What if they want to die? What if some of them are prepared to take your place? Would you let them?

If it was a child, would you save their life?  Children have their whole lives in front of them, they have room to grow, so we should save them so that they have a chance to reach their potential. What if they were mentally disturbed, autistic for example? Do you think that it’s only the fit that should survive?

Do we have the right to make that choice? The mothers of those children would want to save them. Parents want to protect their children, it’s more of nature. Surely sometimes though, they have thought about just ending it for the poor kid, thinking “They will never get anywhere in this world, I should just take matters into my own hands. Save them the indignity.”

Shouldn’t we all have the right to decide on our own lives? Those people out there wanting to end their own lives, shouldn’t they be able to make that choice for themselves? It shouldn’t be a question of whether they go to hell or not, just whether they want to live.

I hope I’ve made you think. Keep thinking. Some day, you might have to make these decisions for yourself.
